Fatigue and cognitive load: when a child is no longer available to learn

Late in the day, a ten-line exercise becomes impossible when it went by unnoticed in the morning. This is neither unwillingness nor a gap in ability: working memory has limits, and everything you ask it to handle is charged to the same account. Here is how to spot what costs, and how to lighten what teaches nothing.

Three loads, only one worth protecting

Intrinsic load
It comes from the complexity of the task itself, relative to what the learner already masters. You do not remove it: you break it up, or postpone it.
Extraneous load
It comes from SUPERFLUOUS processing that does not contribute to learning: a badly worded instruction, a cluttered page, information to be found elsewhere, noise. This is the one to cut first, because it costs without teaching.
Germane load
It comes from the processing that genuinely serves learning. This is the one to preserve, and it is precisely the one that goes first when the other two saturate.

Why school costs so much

Working memory sits at the center of cognitive development and learning: its capacity is associated with academic achievement, reading comprehension, reasoning and problem solving.

And school almost always asks a child to hold several things at once: the instruction, the method, the content, the state of the exercise book, the noise, the passing time.

In children that capacity is more limited than in adults. A task that looks simple to an adult can therefore saturate a child completely, without either of them noticing.

What you can observe

  • The precise moment quality drops, rather than the amount of work produced.
  • What changes when the instruction is written down, read aloud, or broken up.
  • What the child has to hold in mind while working, that could simply be displayed.
  • The gap between morning and late afternoon on a comparable task.
  • How much recovery time is needed after a school day.

Strip out what teaches nothing

  1. Display instead of asking to memorise: the instruction, an example, the steps. What is visible no longer weighs.

  2. One new piece of information at a time; the rest should already be known or available.

  3. Simplify the page: a cluttered layout charges effort that teaches nothing.

  4. Do not ask a child to copy what can be provided: copying consumes the resource meant for understanding.

  5. Put the most costly work where the child is most available, not where it suits the schedule.
