Sensory overload: understanding what may be happening

A child covering their ears in a supermarket, falling apart at the school gate, or suddenly unable to tolerate a t-shirt label is not being difficult: their system is saturated. Sensory overload is a state, not a character trait, and certainly not a diagnosis. This guide explains what may be happening and what helps.

What is actually happening

The body takes in far more than it processes. The filtering happens without thinking about it, until it stops happening. What was bearable in the morning becomes unbearable by late afternoon, not because the child changed their mind, but because the reserve is empty.

That is why the same lunch hall can pass without incident on Monday and end in a meltdown on Thursday. It is not inconsistency; it is accumulation.

The visible reaction usually arrives last. By the time anything shows, saturation has been building for a while.

What the research says, and how carefully

Sensory differences are common among autistic children: reported estimates range from 70% to 95%. That range is itself informative: it reflects how much methods and measures vary, not a settled figure.

Observational work finds that over-responsivity tends to decrease with age, in autistic and non-autistic children alike, while remaining more marked in the first group into adolescence.

But these differences are not exclusive to autism. Tiredness, illness, anxiety, a period of change, or simply a sensitive temperament produce similar pictures. A strong sensory reaction therefore never supports a conclusion on its own.

What you can observe

  • The time of day when reactions increase, rather than the place alone.
  • What came before: how long the child had already been coping, and in what environment.
  • Which channel comes up most often: sound, light, touch, smell, crowds.
  • What genuinely settles things, and how long it takes.
  • The places where everything is fine: they describe the environment that works.

What you can try

  1. Lower the load before the event rather than after: a calmer journey to the supermarket changes more than anything attempted in the aisle.

  2. Offer an exit: knowing a quiet place is available reduces tension, even when the child never uses it.

  3. Change one channel at a time (sound, or light) to find out what actually matters.

  4. Plan a decompression window after school, with no questions and no instructions, before anything else is asked.

  5. Do not ask for explanations during the moment itself; come back to it later, when things are calm.

When outside support can help

  • If reactions intensify, multiply, or start ruling out activities that matter.
  • If the child puts themselves at risk or gets hurt during these moments.
  • If family life reorganises entirely around avoidance.
  • The professionals following your child and the school team can help you work out who to turn to.
